Vodafone’s Speed Upgrade to 14.4 Mbps May Not Shows a Marked Improvement in Speeds
Vodafone has declared the upgrade of its mobile broadband network in parts of Liverpool, Birmingham and London to 14.4 Mbps from speeds of 7.2Mbps. However, this is unlikely to bring about any improvement in actual user experience as the real-time speeds are still expected to be in the range of 1Mbps to 5 Mbps.
Vodafone already has one of the fastest broadband networks in the country with a theoretical speed of 7.2Mbps. But, as company officials were forced to admit recently, the actual speeds have always been between 1 to 5Mbps. The advertised and real broadband speeds rarely match in case of mobile broadband because its actual speed depends on various aspects including the number of users on the network and the physical proximity of the user from the nearest base station.
Company officials have also said subscribers in the newly upgraded places would experience speeds of 1Mbps to 5Mbps, with a maximum speed of 10.8 Mbps. However, Jeni Mundy, the chief technology officer of Vodafone UK, is still enthusiastic about the new project. Mundy said the network upgrade would soon cover more areas across the country. She said the upgrade showed subscribers that Vodafone was proactively looking forward to providing innovative solutions and services to its customers, and would continue to do so in future.
Also, with the introduction of this upgrade, Vodafone would become the first wireless broadband company in the UK to launch the new and faster HSDPA technology.
